Mississippi College Gore Arts Complex

Clinton, MS

The former Clinton High School building has been renovated to house the Mississippi College Gore Arts Complex. Several modifications of the existing structure were required to accommodate the new use of the building and enhance gathering areas. A new architectural screen and signage wall was added to the front elevation of the building, requiring structural support from cantilevered steel frames supported on individual concrete spread footings.

New openings were added in both interior and exterior load-bearing walls of varying compositions. In the new lobby area, entire segments of load-bearing walls were removed and replaced with new steel frames supported by new concrete foundations in order to open up the space while maintaining support of the existing roof structure. A new structure was constructed to house kilns in the rear courtyard. The kiln court structure is comprised of pre-engineered wood roof scissor trusses supported on structural steel beams and columns and a shallow stiffened concrete slab-on-grade foundation.

Smithers Engineers also provide civil engineering services on the project. Site improvements included site layout, drainage improvements, and ADA accessibility to the building.
