Northwest Rankin High School
Flowood, MS
As part of a $178 million bond issue passed by Rankin County, a new high school was constructed for Northwest Rankin High School. The new high school provides over 200,000 square feet of total building area. Educational areas include classrooms, laboratories, academies, and a media center. The fine arts wing houses band, chorus, art, and drama. Athletic facilities consist of a full-scale gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms, and concessions. The facility also includes a full-service kitchen and dining area. Administrative offices were concentrated in the center of the buildings, with support areas scattered throughout the buildings.
All buildings are constructed on a shallow foundation consisting of a stiffened concrete slab-on-grade and spread footings. The structural systems vary throughout the 6 connected buildings depending on architectural factors. The two-story classroom wings are constructed of load-bearing CMU walls supporting open web steel joists and concrete on metal deck floors. The main entrance and administrative area are constructed of steel frames with a composite second floor system. Other areas are constructed of a combination of steel braced frames and steel moment frames supporting open web steel joists. Steel trusses are used in the gymnasium area to span across the width of the structure.
